About Us

Overcomers 

     The name Overcomers was chosen as the school’s mascot when City Baptist was established in 1978.  In the late 70’s, our nation was plagued with economic depression, social unrest, and not to mention; a cold war with communist powers.   Thousands of men were being laid off their steel mill jobs in this region.   Thousands of refugees from Southeast Asia were migrating to the Chicago region seeking jobs and a place to live. Hundreds of our bus ministry workers from First Baptist Church and Hyles-Anderson College were discovering the poverty and loneliness these people were experiencing.

     The combination of a people in need, a caring church, and our Christian duty to teach all nations the Gospel; became the ingredients of one of the most unique schools ever. City Baptist Schools became a school for bus kids. In order to survive, these young people would have to learn to overcome a multitude of obstacles; such as: poverty, gangs, drugs, lack of parental support, language barriers, violence, loneliness, and other social problems that face residents of large inner cities. 

     An Overcomer is one who perseveres when others quit. An Overcomer is one who chooses the right path instead of the path of least resistance. An Overcomer is one who uses obstacles as opportunities to succeed. At City Baptist Schools, we are all Overcomers.

Purpose

     The purpose for City Baptist Schools is to teach young people to live lives that are pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Whether through academic endeavors, athletics, social life, or working a "secular" job; our students are taught that everything is to be done as unto Christ.  Our rules are made to guide the students to discipline themselves and to help them know and do what would please the Saviour.  Our academics are designed to equip the student to pursue whatever endeavors God may have in mind for them.  Our athletics and social events are to help our students to learn to interrelate with each other in such a way that even in "having fun," Jesus can be pleased and glorified.

Doctrinal Statement                                     

    The City Baptist Schools are part of the First Baptist Church of Hammond and operate under the same doctrinal umbrella.  The fundamental doctrines of the historical Baptist faith are held and taught without apology.

Administrative Structure

     City Baptist Schools are part of the school system that is incorporated under the First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana.  The school board is comprised of the Board of Deacons of the church and is elected by the church membership.  Dr. Jack Schaap is the Superintendent of Schools.  Mr. George Vogel serves as the principal of City Baptist Schools.
