Attendance Policy
1. Regular attendance at school is essential to student success. Parents and students are urged to make regular attendance a high priority.
2. Early dismissal of a student must be approved by the office. If someone comes to pick up a student early, that person must come to the office. The student will be paged for dismissal. Students dismissed before 3:00 p.m. are counted absent for one class period.
3. Students registering late at the beginning of a semester are counted absent for the days missed. Also they have the number of days they missed to make up any missed work. Transfer students do not need to make up any work.
4. Students are allowed to miss no more than 15 days per semester for any reason. Students missing more than 15 days will not receive credit for the semester. Students that over absence may continue taking classes for the rest of the semester even though they will not receive credit.
5. Transfer student’s total allowable absences will be pro-rated from the date of transfer.
6. A student who has missed more than ten minutes of a class is considered absent from that class. Sixteen absences from any class will result in loss of credit for that class.
7. Each student is allowed three personal days of excused absences each semester. Personal days could be used for occasions such as visiting relatives or family outings. These absences will be excused only when the office is notified before the absence.
8. The exception to the over absence rule is for a single extended illness. When verified by a doctor, a student may miss up to 40 days per semester because of an extended illness. However, all work must be made up to receive credit.
9. Excused absences are different from unexcused absences in that work may be made up without any loss of grade. All absences must be followed up by a note or phone call to the office by the end of the next school day or the absence becomes unexcused. Only the following are excused absences:
1. Illness
2. Death in family
3. Personal day
4. Medical appointments and/or professional appointments (doctor, dentist, lawyer, etc.) (Only the time required for the appointment and a reasonable amount of travel time will be excused.)
5. Financially withdrawn
10. Any grade school student who over absences one semester must attend summer school in order to be promoted to the next grade. Any student who over absences both semesters should refer to the RETENTION section of the Student Handbook. |
